ARTIST STATEMENT

Susanne Layla Petersen is an interdisciplinary artist who draws from a variety of media to create works that explore the boundaries between the physical and the virtual worlds. Her practice engages with video, photography and sound to create immersive and interactive experiences that challenge traditional modes of reception. Through her work, Petersen seeks to expand our understanding of the nature of materiality and to examine the ways in which our relationship to technology shapes our perception of reality. By blending physical and digital elements, she creates works that capture the ephemeral nature of the present moment while also questioning the role of technology in our lives.



BIOGRAPHY


Susanne Layla Petersen is an internationally renowned artist whose work is known for its provocative, experimental and countercultural approach. She has a diverse practice that ranges from photography, video, performance, and digital art to robotics, AI, and virtual reality.

Born in Copenhagen, Petersen began her career in photography and video art in the early 2000s. Her work quickly gained attention for its subversive, often confrontational messages and its exploration of topics such as parallel realities and identity. Her early projects, such as the video installation “The Unseen” (2001) and the photography series “The Unveiled” (2003), were lauded for their boldness and innovative use of technology.

In the mid-2000s, Petersen began to expand her practice to include digital art, robotics, and AI. Her installations, such as “The Unseen 2” (2005) and “The Unveiled 2” (2007), incorporated sophisticated algorithms and interactive elements that allowed viewers to explore her works in a new way.
